“The Kosovo Bride” makes it to the world

Nita Zeqiri’s picture “Nusja Kosovare” (The Kosovo Bride), has been chosen as the daily feature photo from the National Geographic on 14th of Dec 2012. Mainly due to its unique and message inducing feature, the photo has been selected to portray the millennial old tradition and its passage to current days.
It has been reported by National Geographic that the tradition, while old and fascinating, is on the brink of extinction since there is only an old 65 year old lady that is knowledgeable enough to properly prepare brides to fit the custom.
The face of the bride is painted with multiple layers, each symbolizing different aspects of life. Three golden circles portraying the paths of life, with each intertwining each other, thus symbolizing the complexity of the circle of life. The inner red circles offer insight into the pagan ritual of fertility, with the red and blue dots on the white background, which in turn symbolize the will and wish for a healthy and happy family life.
